BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN COFFEE GROWERS & COFFEE DRINKERS

At Three Story Coffee, we hope to make the connection between the coffee in your cup and the farmers and laborers who worked hard to produce it. We can only accomplish this by sharing their stories.

The reality is, there are many challenges facing coffee farmers around the world. Let’s be honest, farming in general is hard work. Coffee farmers, however, face extreme working conditions, transportation challenges, unfair pricing structures and, often, corrupt government regulations just to name a few. With this being said, it’s incredibly important for us to do our best to make an impact in the coffee world by fostering sustainable, mutually-rewarding relationships with our farmers.

We purchase our coffee through direct trade with farmers. In order for farmers to be fairly compensated for their work, we have to value their coffee appropriately. We know that the true cost of cheap coffee often falls on farmers’ shoulders, and we’re incredibly conscious of doing things ethically so that no one is shortchanged for their labor. In addition, we only work with a limited number of farmers at a time — the quality of our relationships will always outweigh the quantity.

WHERE OUR COFFEE FARMERS WORK & LIVE

Coffee farmers can be found in countries all over the world, and the list of farms we partner with continues to grow. Currently, we’re proud to work with farmers in Guatemala and El Salvador in Central America, Ethiopia and Burundi in Africa, and Sumatra in Indonesia. Soon, we’ll begin sourcing coffee from Kenya as well. Our founders have been fortunate enough to visit many of these farms several times, and the stories of our travels and the people we met are ones we still share around our dinner table frequently.

Guatemala

Finca PalESTINA & FINCA EL ZAPOTE

Cousins Joel and Julio Perez have faithfully provided our Guatemala coffee since 2013. Their farms are next to each other in the Acatenango Valley of Southwest Guatemala.

BURUNDI

Gaharo Hill

Since 2013, we have partnered with Long Miles Coffee Project to source their incredible coffee. Long Miles works with over 5,500 farmers on 11 Hills. Gaharo Hill itself is home to approximately 200 coffee farming families near the village of Bukeye.

SUMATRA

gayo

Santiang Exports works with local farmers in the Gayo region to develop and produce high quality coffees – arguably the best in Sumatra. We’ve been honored to partner with them since 2016.

HOW OUR COFFEE IS HARVESTED & PROCESSED

The journey of coffee from tree to cup is long and tedious, sometimes lasting 6-9 months or more. A good cup of coffee depends heavily on the detailed and careful handling of the entire process from start to finish.

All of our coffee is hand-picked at peak ripeness, sorted and graded for any harvest defects, depulped and wet-milled or prepped for natural processing. Then it’s carefully dried over the course of several weeks, then hand sorted and graded again. Once properly dried, it is ready for dry-milling, another hand sorting and grading, before being bagged and prepped for export.. Our farmers have spent their lives learning to grow and process coffee, and many of them have inherited this knowledge as part of multi-generational coffee farming families. Their dedication to producing quality coffee is one more benefit to creating long-term relationships and another reason we look for opportunities to encourage and support farmers to experiment with new coffee varietals, growing methods, drying techniques and other processes that help improve the quality, quantity and value of the coffee they grow.
